Cinema Paradiso

One may say that it was not love of first sight. The first minutes were hard to go through. Maybe it wouldn't have been so hard to get into the story if Cinema Paradiso didn't start with the end. But it does.

We barely knew the movie characters and the director – Giuseppe Tornatore – was already providing us with a spoiler – the death of one of the main characters. No, we are not being spoilers! After all, no spoiler can ever tell the beginning of a movie. And this is, indeed, the beginning of Cinema Paradiso.

Cinema Paradiso is a film of the dramatic genre, a classic of Italian cinema, with an endless list of awards. It premiered in Italy in 1988 and in Portugal two years later, in 1990. The action unfolds in a small town in Sicily, where a cinema theatre becomes the meeting point for all its inhabitants.

Performed by Salvatore Cascio (as child) and Jacques Perrin (as adult), Tótó is one of the main characters. He was a boy who loved cinema, even against his mother's will. Whenever he could, he would sneak to the cinema theatre, spending the money his mother would give him for the groceries. It was at the cinema that he met Alfredo - played by Philippe Noiret - a gentleman who had Totó's dream job. Alfredo was responsible for screening and censoring the movies.

As the story unfolds, Alfredo and Tótó become friends, and after much insistence, Alfredo lets his younger friend screen a film.

At a given moment, Alfredo has a serious accident and is forced to leave his job, and Tótó takes his place.

As time goes by, Tótó grows up and must do his mandatory army service. Alfredo advises him never to return so as not to waste his life with cinema.

At the end of the film the analepse ends and the initial scene with an adult Tótó resumes. He returns to his hometown for Alfredo's funeral and finds the cinema theatre abandoned with a gift left by his old friend.

This is a very touching movie, achieving this through a play of relationships that form over the course of the film and eventually break down.

The movies’ original soundtrack is always the same, but it does not turn out repetitive. It suits every moment of the film, regardless of being happy or sad. And it is also a melody that lingers in the ear.

Though this is an old movie, it portrays a common reality nowadays. A young man who had a dream and abandoned it because it was not viable for his future.

Regardless some problems, like the initial boredom, the movie becomes pleasant and provides a great moment of cinema that for sure will stay in the memory of the public.

Pode dizer-se que não foi paixão à primeira vista. Os primeiros minutos custaram a passar. Talvez não tivesse sido tão difícil entrar na história se o filme Cinema Paraíso não começasse pelo fim. Mas começa.

Mal conhecíamos as personagens e já o realizador - o italiano Giuseppe Tornatore - nos estava a dar um spoiler da história - a morte de uma das personagens principais. Não, nós não estamos a ser spoilers! Afinal, não há spoiler que conte o início de um filme. E este é mesmo o início de Cinema Paraíso.

A ação desenrola-se numa pequena cidade da Sicília, onde uma sala de cinema se torna o ponto de encontro de todos os habitantes.

Quando podia esgueirava-se até ao cinema e gastava o dinheiro que a mãe lhe dava para as mercearias. É no cinema que Tótó conhece Alfredo - interpretado por Philippe Noiret - um senhor que tinha o trabalho de sonho de Tótó. Ele era responsável por passar e também censurar os filmes.

Com o desenrolar da história, Alfredo e Tótó tornam-se amigos e após muita insistência, Alfredo deixou o seu amigo passar um filme.

A certa altura ocorre um acidente grave e por isso Alfredo é obrigado a deixar o seu trabalho e Tótó assume o seu lugar.

Com o passar do tempo, Tótó foi crescendo e teve de prestar serviço obrigatório no exército. Alfredo aconselhou-o a nunca mais voltar para não desperdiçar a sua vida com o cinema.

No final do filme a analepse termina e retoma-se a cena inicial com Tótó adulto. Ele volta à cidade natal para o funeral de Alfredo e encontra o cinema abandonado com um presente deixado pelo seu velho amigo.

É um filme muito emotivo, conseguindo-o através de um jogo de relações que se formam no decorrer do filme e que eventualmente se quebram.

A música do tema do filme é sempre a mesma, mas não é por isso que se torna repetitiva. Adequa-se a todos os momentos do filme, sejam felizes ou tristes. E é também uma melodia que fica no ouvido.

Apesar de ser um filme antigo retrata uma realidade comum nos dias de hoje. Um jovem que tinha um sonho e abandonou-o por não ser viável para o seu futuro.

Mesmo com alguns problemas, como a seca inicial, o filme torna-se agradável e proporciona um ótimo momento de cinema que de certeza irá ficar na memória de todos os espectadores.
