One day, he gets a phone call from his mother announcing the death of his old friend Alfredo. The mention of that name brings him back memories of his childhood, especially of Cinema Paradiso, where Salvatore, then called Toto, would run off to whenever he had the chance, after Mass ended. He used to peek at the projections through the cinema curtains while the priest watched them before they were shown, in order to censor the scenes containing kissing. After that, Toto would frequently spend time with Alfredo, the projectionist. It’s interesting to see how much he enjoyed being in the projection room and the curiosity the kid had about projecting films and learning more about cinema, because it reminds us of that feeling from our own childhood when we loved to explore and discover new things.

Cinema Paradiso é uma mistura de emoções e sensações incríveis e nostálgicas. Conta a história de Salvatore di Vita, um cineasta bem-sucedido que vive em Roma. Um dia recebe um telefonema da sua mãe avisando-o da morte do seu velho amigo Alfredo. A menção deste nome traz-lhe lembranças da sua infância e, principalmente, do Cinema Paradiso, para onde Salvatore, então chamado de Totó, fugia, sempre que podia, depois que acabava a missa. Ele costumava espreitar as projeções através das cortinas do cinema, enquanto o padre as via, antes de serem projetadas, para censurar as imagens que possuíam beijos. Totó costumava, depois, fazer companhia a Alfredo, o projecionista. É interessante ver o tanto que ele se divertia na sala de projeção e a curiosidade que o pequeno tinha em projetar os filmes e aprender mais acerca de cinema, porque nos faz recordar aquela sensação de quando éramos crianças e adorávamos explorar e descobrir novas coisas.

Essas imagens, de uma beleza pura e simples, trazem-nosalegria, mas igualmente uma certa saudade de tempos que já não voltam. Tempos em que o cinema nos juntava em comunidade e nos transportava, juntos, para um lugar comum, de partilha de emoções e criação de memórias. Ennio Morricone também fez um excelente trabalho com a banda sonora, dando ainda mais esplendor ao filme icônico de Giuseppe Tornatore.
